Floorless & Roofless...
Summer 2005
On to Xmas 2005 >>>
Sometimes it didn't rain while we were out in Ireland this summer (well, September anyhow...)
When it did rain, we took the rotten floor joists out, and are now about to replace them; but of course there are delays in the timberyard supplying the new ones so we have had to get on with other jobs instead of getting our floor in...

When it wasn't raining we got a roof onto the shed out back which has been rebuilt - only the gable ends were really still there, the rest had completely fallen down, so we had it rebuilt with a concrete blockwork interior and stone exterior walls. Ger, the stonemason has done a fantastic job, but he only built the walls, we have to put the roof on...

Eventually we'll have a grass and seddam (type of flower) roof, which is why the slope is at such a low angle, but for this winter we'll just get it felted and sealed, and worry about the live roof stuff next spring. Right now we just want to get the shed functional as a one room house so that we have a more permanent base to live in while we are working on the main house. When it's done we'll have an inside bathroom!
This time the rain has been really heavy at times (well, we were working on a roof so what did we expect?) and the new road and bridge which we thought was far too big while it was being constructed has been shown to work:
This is how we used to cross the river to get to the house:

then the council put in the new road and bridge:

and after a day's heavy rain this is the new bridge doing it's stuff - the water here is more than a metre deep - that's why we had to have the LandRover to reach the house originally!:

Now Carol's off to Niger for a while, and Tony will be continuing to work on the house (next exciting episode - the electrics...)
