The opening behind is the entrance to the Salang Tunnel - the original concrete entrance had been blown up. This man is a porter carrying items through since at the time no vehicles were permitted to use the tunnel (it was still not cleared of rubble and explosives) so all vehicles had to unload and the goods were carried through and put into vehicles at the other end after a 2km walk in the freezing darkness at 3.5 km altitude.
