The Southern exit of the Salang Tunnel - built by the Russians through the Hindu Kush mountains at an altitude of three and a half kilometres the tunnel was blown up and filled with mines by Massooud (the 'Lion of the Pansheer') during the Afghan Civil War following the Russian withdrawal. The NGOs Halo Trust and ACTED had cleared the mines and rubble from the tunnel - this car was the first independent vehicle permitted through the tunnel in 2001 whilst the clearing was continuing.
