The tanks and other military equipment which scatter the Afghan landscape provide a source of metal and useful items for the population. These men are removing a suspension arm in order to reuse the swivel mounting. The tanks will remain features of the landscape for generations, rust will make slow progress on several centimetres of armour plate.
